➕ Decimal Addition ➕

To add decimals, align the decimal points vertically, then add each column as you would with whole numbers. Carry over when necessary.

Example: Add 3.25 and 1.78

  3.25
+ 1.78

  5.03

➖ Decimal Subtraction ➖

To subtract decimals, align the decimal points vertically, then subtract each column as you would with whole numbers. Borrow when necessary.

Example: Subtract 1.78 from 3.25

  3.25
- 1.78
------
  1.47

✖️ Decimal Multiplication ✖️

To multiply decimals, multiply as you would with whole numbers, then count the total number of decimal places in the factors. Place the decimal point in the product so that it has the same number of decimal places.

Example: Multiply 3.25 and 1.7

  3.25  (2 decimal places)
x 1.7   (1 decimal place)

5.525 (3 decimal places)

➗ Decimal Division ➗

To divide decimals, if the divisor is a decimal, move the decimal point to the right until the divisor is a whole number. Move the decimal point in the dividend the same number of places. Then, divide as you would with whole numbers, placing the decimal point in the quotient directly above the decimal point in the dividend.

Example: Divide 5.525 by 1.7

     3.25
1.7|5.525  -> 17|55.25
   -51
   ----

    -34
    ----
      85
     -85
     ----
      0

Therefore, 5.525 ÷ 1.7 = 3.25
